Irish Jockey Michael O’Sullivan in Intensive Care After Thurles Fall

Irish jockey Michael O’Sullivan is in intensive care after suffering a fall at Thurles on Thursday.

The 25-year-old was riding Wee Charlie for trainer Gerard O’Leary when he was among three jockeys to fall at the final fence in the two-mile Racing Again February 20th Handicap Chase.

O’Sullivan received immediate medical attention on the track before being airlifted to Cork University Hospital for further treatment. Following the incident, the remainder of the race meeting was abandoned.

In a statement on Friday, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) provided an update on his condition, saying: “Michael is in the intensive care unit at Cork University Hospital being treated for his injuries sustained at Thurles yesterday and is receiving the best medical care. Michael’s family wish to express their gratitude for all the well wishes.”

O’Sullivan gained widespread recognition in 2023 with victories at the Cheltenham Festival, winning the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle aboard Marine Nationale and the Fred Winter aboard Jazzy Matty.

This season, he has recorded 14 wins in Ireland and two in Britain.
